Are you suffering from morning sickness and realising its not just in the mornings? Our acupuncturists here at Haynes acupuncture Gold Coast are here to assist you through your pregnancy.

Why do I have morning sickness?

Popular theory suggests that the increase in the hormone, human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) that is produced at very high levels in the first trimester is the reason behind that nauseous feeling, however about 1/3 of women won’t have these signs and symptoms. That doesn’t necessarily mean anything is wrong if you do or don’t have morning sickness, as everyone’s system responds differently.

How can acupuncture help? Morning Sickness acupuncture gold coast

Acupuncture may assist in balancing the hormones and the underlying issue that is likely causing the morning sickness, as well as assisting with fetal development. This is done with the use of fine needles inserted into specific points and/or with moxa (mugwort), which also assists in stimulating acupuncture points. Studies have shown that it has been effective in reducing nausea and dry retching in early pregnancy (Smith et al. 2000).

As we’ve mentioned every woman will present differently with morning sickness, so each treatment is individually tailored to you, as the root cause will likely be different to the next woman. So not only will you have a relief of the queasiness, you will also enjoy some quiet, relaxing time with no one bothering you – what else could you ask for!

Is there anything else I can do to ease the symptoms?

Maintaining hydration and keeping your blood sugar levels as stable as possible are 2 ways to help.

Dry lips, thirst and reduced urinary output are common signs of dehydration, but drinking copious amounts of water in one go may not go down so well either…

So, we suggest;

  • Sipping on water throughout the day (even add some fresh fruit or mint to add some flavour)
  • Cups of ginger or peppermint tea
  • Mineral water with fresh lemon (the gas helps some women)
  • Soups (miso or a bone broth) to increase your fluid consumption

Small, regular snacks every 1.5 to 2 hrs can also help to keep your blood sugar stable. Try some nuts or raisins, ½ a sandwich or dry crackers whilst staying clear of high sugary foods and simple carbohydrates (pastries, cake, chocolate, orange juice) that will only cause a spike and then a drop, in your blood sugar levels which we are trying to avoid.

I need acupuncture! How many treatments will I need and how do I book?

Usually morning sickness symptoms will ease or go away after 12 weeks, but some unlucky women can have it much longer. Weekly treatments are usually up until 12 weeks and then monthly treatments through 2nd trimester for maintenance for you and bub.

You can book by calling us on (07) 5531 6461 or alternatively book online here.
